Alessandra Ambrosio Getty ImagesAdvertisement - Continue Reading BelowStill seeking self-tanning perfection? Victoria's Secret bronzing guru Meredith Baraf and St. Tropez celebrity tanning expert Fiona Locke reveal how to get a natural-looking faux glow.
Code Orange! Avoid Looking Like a Carrot
Most self-tanners contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a colorless sugar that interacts with the top layer of skin to darken. According to Locke, who works with Olivia Wilde, Katharine McPhee, and the cast of Dancing with the Stars, an orange tint is often due to an oversaturation of DHA—which can occur when you layer on too much product or use a self-tanner with a percentage of DHA too high for your skin type. "Some people can tolerate higher levels of DHA than others, based on their natural tone and skin pH," says Locke. "I have certain clients where I can put a tremendous amount of product on and they absorb it like a sponge and never get too dark or turn a strange color. Others, I'll do one light layer and they're ultratan." To determine how a self-tanning solution will work with your skin, Locke suggests applying a small amount to a test area before covering your entire body.
More From ELLEBesides avoiding the urge to slather on or spray loads of product, Locke says choosing the right formula also determines how your tan will appear. "Go with a reputable brand, one that uses a lower percentage of DHA so that you can build your color accordingly," she says. Bronze-seekers should also go for products infused with erythrulose, a sugar sourced from raspberries. The combination of DHA and erythrulose in a sunless tanning product is believed to yield longer-lasting, cosmetically pleasing color. Some self-tanners, like those found in the St. Tropez collection, also contain green pigment to help counteract any orange.
Pre-Tanning Prep: Create the Ideal Canvas
"The most important thing to do is exfoliate," says Baraf, who gives Victoria's Secret models Alessandra Ambrosio, Marisa Miller, and Miranda Kerr their photo-ready glow. To get the smoothest, streak-free color possible, Baraf emphasizes the necessity of applying self-tanner immediately after exfoliating: "The outer layer of the epidermis, which is what the self-tanner interacts with, is composed of dead skin cells that last only seven to 10 days before they shed. You want to make sure you have an even layer of dead skin cells so that they all tan and slough off together." If you don't properly exfoliate "some of the skin will begin peeling in a day or two," adds Baraf, which can result in a splotchy tan job.
Go for a scrub that is gentle (think spherical, man-made beads over granular ones with uneven edges) to avoid irritating the skin prior to tanning. The ideal scrub should also be oil-free ("an oil-based polish can act as a barrier between the self-tanner and top layer of the skin," says Locke). When in a bind, using a loofah or muslin cloth with water will do the trick too.
The next prep step varies depending on who you ask: "There are two camps of thought," says Baraf. "Some experts recommend moisturizing, while others think lotion gets in the way of the chemical reaction between the DHA and the skin." Baraf says she personally prefers skin to be moist and that a way to avoid the controversy is to use a gradual tan moisturizer: "A moisturizer that contains self-tanner is formulated to work with DHA, so you don't have to worry about it clogging the pores. Plus, if you miss a spot with the full-fledged self-tanner, you've already covered it with the gradual tanner."
For her part, Locke thinks skin should be dry pre-application but says she'll use a light layer of moisturizer on particularly dry areas like the elbows, hands, feet, ankles, and knees so that they don't overabsorb color. She favors St. Tropez self-tanner because it has hydrating aloe vera in it to help compensate for any dryness ("As soon as you put the product on, your skin feels hydrated"). Clarins self-tanning products also contain aloe vera, and the new Victoria's Secret BeachSexy Sun-Kissed Bronze Instant Self Tan Lotion includes hydrators like coconut oil and avocado oil.
Who Has Your Back? The Application Process
Self-tanning novices are best off using an easy-to-control mousse or gel with a wash-off cosmetic tint, say Baraf and Locke. "The advantage is that you can see what you're doing, and you won't miss any spots," says Locke. For self-tanner enthusiasts, however, both experts say an aerosol spray is the best option: "It's quicker—you can just throw a towel down in your shower and go for it," says Locke.
Guide color or not, pay close attention to what areas you've covered. "Start from the bottom of your body and work your way up so that you don't crease the color when you bend over," says Baraf, adding that those who use a spray should "always keep the bottle and wrist moving" for an even application.
When it comes to covering your back, Baraf suggests "looking over your shoulder, spraying into the air behind you, and stepping back into the mist—kind of like how you walk into perfume. Do this up to three times to ensure that enough of the product lands on your skin."
Contouring Secrets: Slim, Boost, and Define
To make cleavage worthy of a Victoria's Secret catalogue, Baraf says to don your favorite push-up bra a half hour after applying self-tanner. Next, use an aerosol spray tanner and mist the M-shaped indentation created by the bra. Spraying on this second coat will make the area appear darker and more defined.
Besides this optical illusion, Baraf believes that all other contouring endeavors should be done by a professional or with makeup to avoid a "stripe-y" appearance. For example, to thin thighs, use a powder body bronzer or long-wearing gel product to darken the sides: "Darker skin absorbs more light than it reflects and makes the sides of the legs recede," says Baraf. To further draw the eye inward, she says to dust highlighter down the center.

They say the kitchen is the heart of the home. If that's true, are you heart-healthy? Is your kitchen set up like a Michelin Star Chef's, or do you have four junk drawers filled with old takeout menus and three can openers because you never know where they are? And hey, no judgment, no one is perfect. But your kitchen can be....
Advertisement - Continue Reading BelowEverything in the kitchen falls into one of three categories: prep, cooking, serving. Divide everything into these categories and store them together where they are used. For instance, keep pots and pans nearest the stove/oven, and serving pieces nearest the dishwasher. Store all baking supplies together—where you store it depends on how often you bake. Rule of thumb: the less often something is used, the higher it goes.

NEXT STOP: COFFEE STATION

If you enjoy coffee and/or tea, create a station. Coffee machine on the counter, coffee mugs and sweeteners in a cabinet right above (regardless of where the rest of your glasses live!) Lots of clients fight me on this at first, saying they like all their cups together or don't have room for it. I just do it without telling them, letting them discover it on their own. No one has reverted back.

JUNK DRAWER JUNKIE

You don't need a junk drawer. You just don't. Clean it out, keeping only the things you actually need in the kitchen, which is usually one-tenth of what's in there. Pens that don't work? Out. Miscellaneous receipts, takeout menus, rubber balls, grocery lists? Be gone. Now you have a whole new drawer! What to put here? Pick a category: towels, prep tools, knives, specialty servicing pieces like those huge salad spoons and cake servers, or put back the 'junk' in an organized way; pens that actually work, notepads, batteries, whatever. Just make sure it's not a jumbled mess.

SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE

If you only use half of a set of something regularly, store that half low and the rest on the hard-to-reach upper shelf for those few occasions you may need them. The lower shelves should be for what you use the most. Plates stacked 12 high can be a bit much, especially for us shorties.

STOP MONKEYING AROUND

If you're designing your new kitchen, don't use lower cabinets, install drawers instead. I mean really, do you love crawling on the floor to get to the back of the lowest shelf? Neither do I. For those of us not designing a new kitchen, use freestanding elfa drawers from the Container Store, or install pullouts. Just be sure to measure not the inside of the cabinet, but the opening between hinges with doors open. One client called the drawers 'life changing.' You'll think so too.

The bedroom, a place that should be dedicated to rest and repose, is too often a dumping ground for things to be repaired, clothes to be returned, items to donate, and detritus that doesn't fit anywhere else in the home. With so many of us plagued by insomnia, there's even more reason to keep your sleeping quarters a place where you can relax and take quiet time for yourself.

JUST SAY NO TO SHELFIES

Use the top drawer of your dresser to store unsightly lotion bottles, deodorant, and anything else cluttering up the surface of your dresser. Use inexpensive plastic bins, like these from Muji, to keep it organized; don't just dump it all in there! A tray can hold a curated selection of items you'd like on the top of the dresser, and a little bowl or dish can contain often-worn jewelry.

OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND

If you like to have access to a lot of things near your bed, get a closed nightstand, one with drawers and/or a cabinet door. Splurging? Try this walnut-fronted number from Organic Modernism. Saving? Ikea to the rescue. If you have an open shelf, use a basket to corral and hide books, tissues, et al.

DUST BUNNIES ONLY SOUND CUTE

Storing things under the bed should be an absolute last resort. If you absolutely must, get large drawers or bins that can be easily pulled out and cleaned off once a week, or a few times a month.

HOOK IT UP

Install hooks on the back of the door or wall behind the door (so you don't have to see them when settling into bed), to organize clothes to air out before going back in closet, your robe, and clothes for tomorrow.

REPEAT AFTER ME: MOOD LIGHTING

Nightstands with matching bedside lamps are a no-brainer. Or, better yet, hang modern sconces. Not only do they give the room a more finished look, harsh overhead lights can keep your body from transitioning into sleep.

Advertisement - Continue Reading BelowPrabal Gurung has a bevy of top-level, A-list fans, including Michelle Obama and Lady Gaga (she recently wore one of his designs to the MTV VMAs). But the young Hollywood set hearts him, too, including the absolutely gorgeous Allison Williams, who plays Marnie Michaels on HBO's hit series Girls. We caught up with Williams after she gave Gurung a huge hug backstage before his show and thanked him for dressing her in one of his covetable creations…
How did you pick this Prabal Gurung dress to wear today?Well, it was really tough because everything he designs I love—truly. Everything I saw I loved, and this just felt whimsical. It's fall, yes, technically, but it still feels really beautiful and summery outside. I kind of like that it's a little bit of an optical illusion with the fabric. I like the silhouette of it. Plus, then I could do these nails…Who did it?Pattie Yankee. They're ombre oxblood.Let's talk about 'Girls!' What is Marnie is going to do since Christopher Abbott, who plays her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Charlie, left the show? It's not pretty. It's pretty sad. Every season I say this, but I had so much fun this season. I had an absolute blast. Where she ends up is very different from where she started, which I always love, and the writers gave me an incredible arc to portray. If you're a Marnie supporter, you're gonna be okay. We're going to be good.So many viewers can relate to that first love who you hang on to and keep going back to. Did you draw any inspiration from your own life to get into her head?Of course, there's nothing on our show that either I, or one of my friends, hasn't been through, and that I can't pull from, which is kind of what I think is brilliant about Lena [Dunham]. She's so free with her own experiences, but she's also smart at analyzing everyone around her and being able to say, "Well my friend did this, so I'm just going to put this in the show and see if it resonates with one of these characters." She's very fluid like that. One of our favorite scenes is when Marnie crashes Charlie's office party and performs an off-tune version of Kanye West's "Stronger." What went into creating that song and scene? We recorded the actual song. It was Michael Penn who was the composer for our show. He and I worked on it for weeks and weeks to get the right sounds so it sounds like Marnie could've done it in a day, which was hard for him to write because he's a musical genius. So [it was difficult to] write a song that sounded like a total amateur did it. She wrote it one day on garage band with Ray [Ploshansky]'s help. And how did you bring it to life? For me, Marnie is a very matter-of-fact singer; there's not much emotion. She does weird arm movements, so once I figured that out it was pretty easy. But the performance was awkward, because I had an earpiece in to hear the music but no one else could. So all those extras were listening to me sing acapella like a crazy person. And even as I watching it as the episode aired, I was like, "Don't do this. Don't do this. Stop. Someone cut this before she starts singing." But it happened.Any other plans for NYFW?I'm going to DVF tomorrow and I'm super excited. Other than that it's back to work on Monday.See the spring 2014 Ready-to-Wear collections.

Advertisement - Continue Reading BelowThough I wouldn't trade them for the world, I've always wished my nose was slightly thinner and my lips were a tad thicker (I'd kill for Angelina's sexy pout!). That said, I love my eyes! A certifiable eye makeup junkie, I'm forever experimenting with different techniques, colors, and textures in an effort to find fun new ways to make eye-popping statements. Sometimes, I'm let down—like when my creative pursuits are undone by cake-y liner, flaking mascara, and not-so-long-lasting shadow. Other times, however, I fall head over heels—as was the case with Maybelline New York's Eye Studio collection (which is rolling out in drugstores as we speak).
More From ELLEComposed of vibrant stay-put shadows, smooth gel eyeliners, and pro-power mascaras, the stunning products are all under $10, but out-perform many pricier products I've tried. No joke—since receiving my preview samples a month ago, I've been using the Color Plush Eyeshadow every day and the XXL Pro Mascara every weekend (hello, party-ready lashes!).
—Emily Hebert
This is a lavender look I've recreated often in recent weeks (purple eye shadow is supposed to bring out the green in hazel eyes). Using the Eye Studio Color Plush Eyeshadow in Purple Icon, I applied the silvery hue on the inner corners to make my eyes appear farther apart and more Bambi-like. Next, I used the two medium-purple shades on the lid, saving the darkest plum for the crease. (Because I have Asian eyes, I applied shadow pretty liberally—color tends to disappear into my crease when my eyes are open!). Using the brush that it came with, I then applied the Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner in Blackest Black along the upper lash line. On the lower lash line, I used the same product in Eggplant. To finish, I brushed Lash Stiletto Voluptuous Mascara (also new) on lower lashes and XXL Pro Curl on upper ones. (Note: The XXL Pro Curl is a miracle-worker for me, because I have a major aversion to lash curlers—I inevitably tense up and blink at lightening-fast speed the second the cool metal hits my eye.)
