But the young Hollywood set hearts him, too, including the absolutely gorgeous Allison Williams, who plays Marnie Michaels on HBO's hit series Girls. We caught up with Williams after she gave Gurung a huge hug backstage before his show and thanked him for dressing her in one of his covetable creations…
How did you pick this Prabal Gurung dress to wear today?Well, it was really tough because everything he designs I love—truly. Everything I saw I loved, and this just felt whimsical. It's fall, yes, technically, but it still feels really beautiful and summery outside. I kind of like that it's a little bit of an optical illusion with the fabric. I like the silhouette of it. Plus, then I could do these nails…Who did it?Pattie Yankee. They're ombre oxblood.Let's talk about 'Girls!' What is Marnie is going to do since Christopher Abbott, who plays her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Charlie, left the show?It's not pretty. It's pretty sad. Every season I say this, but I had so much fun this season. I had an absolute blast. Where she ends up is very different from where she started, which I always love, and the writers gave me an incredible arc to portray. If you're a Marnie supporter, you're gonna be okay. We're going to be good.So many viewers can relate to that first love who you hang on to and keep going back to. Did you draw any inspiration from your own life to get into her head?Of course, there's nothing on our show that either I, or one of my friends, hasn't been through, and that I can't pull from, which is kind of what I think is brilliant about Lena [Dunham]. She's so free with her own experiences, but she's also smart at analyzing everyone around her and being able to say, "Well my friend did this, so I'm just going to put this in the show and see if it resonates with one of these characters." She's very fluid like that.One of our favorite scenes is when Marnie crashes Charlie's office party and performs an off-tune version of Kanye West's "Stronger." What went into creating that song and scene?We recorded the actual song. It was Michael Penn who was the composer for our show. He and I worked on it for weeks and weeks to get the right sounds so it sounds like Marnie could've done it in a day, which was hard for him to write because he's a musical genius. So [it was difficult to] write a song that sounded like a total amateur did it. She wrote it one day on garage band with Ray [Ploshansky]'s help.And how did you bring it to life?For me, Marnie is a very matter-of-fact singer; there's not much emotion. She does weird arm movements, so once I figured that out it was pretty easy. But the performance was awkward, because I had an earpiece in to hear the music but no one else could. So all those extras were listening to me sing acapella like a crazy person. And even as I watching it as the episode aired, I was like, "Don't do this. Don't do this. Stop. Someone cut this before she starts singing." But it happened.Any other plans for NYFW?I'm going to DVF tomorrow and I'm super excited.
